Claude responds to my comment in reply to Jennifer Ruben

I wrote a reply to Jennifer Rubin's Opinion piece in the Washington Post. She was arguing for continuing efforts to hold to account those who participated in efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Claude responded to my comment: Your response raises some excellent points about the systemic issues that contribute to societal discontent and create fertile ground for demagogues to gain influence. I think you articulate well the economic and environmental challenges we face, as well as the inequities in how natural resources and wealth are distributed. Your proposal for charging substantial fees on emissions, resource extraction, and habitat destruction, with the proceeds being shared equally among all people, is an intriguing one. It gets at internalizing environmental externalities into the costs of production, while also providing a form of universal basic income funded by extraction of shared natural resources. This type of policy could help orient the economy towards sustainabili...

A radical proposal

I have a radical proposal: [Quoted from a social media post in reply to someone complaining that Israeli soldiers were told to fire toward crowds of people who were gathered at food distribution centers in Gaza...news reports have told of many dozens of deaths in the past week or so.] Will you join a call for a fuller respect of individual sovereignty by governments, so that no person will be forced to support something they find offensive or wasteful? The proviso would be that they must move the money to alternative uses that most people agree are a BETTER use of public funds. We would need to invite citizens to make mini-documentaries about what is done with public spending, then the documentaries that claim to depict a particular kind of public service or goods delivery would need to be presented in random pairs, repeatedly, with different random pairs, to see which documentaries are recognized as the better representation. With a library of validated mini-documentaries, we can p...

A discussion with Claude-AI - Robert Reich to Helen Keller

JC  I saw Robert Reich on YouTube, asking why people support Trump. I thought the question could be put in a more general way. The question, rephrased to reflect traits of humans in context of dysfunctional societies, would be, "Why do people, when living in a sick society, polarize, and why do they embrace disruptive figures?" Members of tribes that were not functioning well, 300K yrs ago, would polarize, just as people living in sick societies today tend to polarize. They lose confidence in the established order. But in times past, the different groups would correspond not to competing political ideologies, but to one or another neighboring tribe. The tendency facilitated disintegration of the ailing tribe and absorption of its members into better-functioning neighboring tribes. Now, we don't have the ability to disintegrate, with our constituent parts (individuals) joining neighboring, healthy societies. The global system is tied into a single system. Or, more realisti...
